A dazzler from my New York City writing period. Influenced by Bob Dylan Roger McGuinn and John Prine.
lyrics
Here comes the high wire walker
He's getting tired of playing that three shell game,
So he's surfing thru home shopping catalogs,
To send away for fleeting fortune or fame
He's keeping his options open,
In case Manhattan Cable moves out to Queens,
He might require the use of a second converter,
To program all his favorite tabloid schemes,
But when the bills pile up, and they come to collect
He'll just scramble his signal and duck,
He's not trying to hide he's just Down On His Luck...
The postman rings twice in the evening
He says I've got a letter you might not want
Thumbs thru his sack full of woe mixed with joy
Pulls out an invite from a confidant,
And me..I'd rather be at Western Union,
Receiving messages from long dead spies,
Than to have to admit, my career took a hit
Or maybe dazzle you with more of my lies
So excuse me if I don't take this dance
My feet get too easily stuck,
I'll just sit this one out, cause I'm Down On My Luck..
30 days for 59 dollars, at a club rated by all magazines,
For 2 dollars a day, get a leg up and stay
No crowds no waiting no unfortunate scenes
A revolving door whips round in anger
When I casually mention my name
The concierge squeals with pride
When he throws me outside and says
"Don't come back till your soul's soaked with rain!"
When bolts of lightning split the night
And leaves those in fear thunderstruck..
I can face anything, I'm just Down On My Luck...
(12 String Guitar Solo)
Politicians escape with their anger
Like steam bottled up with no room to spare
They slip thru the net like some Internet vet,
With 14 carat spray that freshens the air,
We sit round like protected species,
We graze around and we coo "Thanks a lot!"
Like Buffalo herds, we stampede to their words
While the Calvalry steals what we've got
If all these things still cost so much
How come pawnbrokers won't give a buck
I've just misplaced my ticket, I'm Down On My Luck..
